Overview
Pressure injuries can have a significant impact on an athlete’s health and wellbeing. A pressure injury may result in reduced independence and increased care needs. Reduced training and/or competition availability from a pressure injury may be an additional psychosocial stressor on the athlete.
To achieve best outcomes in the prevention and management of pressure injuries it is important to utilise the care of multidisciplinary team of HCPs that can includes doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other allied health practitioners based on an athletes identified risk/contributing factors and individualised needs.
This document is intended for medical doctors, physiotherapists, nurses, and other allied health practitioners to guide assessment, prevention, and management of pressure injuries for athletes in para sports. It also includes practical fact sheets to provide education and advice to athletes and support staff.
