The AIS has launched a significant research grant dedicated to the critical exploration of 'Return to Play' in high performance sport.
This research initiative will help advance understanding of the safe and efficient return of athletes to competition following injuries.
The 'return to play' process in high performance sports is a complex and multifaceted challenge that requires thorough investigation. Athletes and their support teams require evidence-based guidelines and protocols to make informed decisions that ensure the athlete's wellbeing while optimising their performance.
This research grant will focus on delivering actionable insights to aid athletes, coaches, and their support personnel in managing the return-to-play journey effectively.
AIS Chief Science Officer Dr Paolo Menaspa says this is a great opportunity to support research that will provide valuable insights and guidance to our athlete support networks as they navigate the often-difficult considerations related to return to training and competition.
"Effective return to play protocols have been developed, and the nature of this research is to challenge whether we can do better as we approach Brisbane 2032," Dr Menaspa said.
The research will commence in 2024, with research outputs potentially benefiting athletes during the LA Olympic and Paralympic cycle.
