Demand for the AIS campus is heating up, with 15 sports and more than 1000 people so far booked in for 31 high performance camps during March and April.
A number of sports, like Bowls Australia, have been at the AIS honing their preparation for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Australia’s high performance Bowls programs, the Jackaroos and Para Jackaroos, have been at Commonwealth Games preparation camp at the AIS this week, combining training, strength testing and physiological screening with workshops of areas such as athlete wellbeing, education and leadership.
"Bowls Australia's Right At Home Jackaroos and Para Jackaroos were thrilled to continue our preparations for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games campaign across the Gold Coast and at the Australian Institute of Sport last week, with a concerted focus on athlete conditioning, wellbeing, recovery, technique analysis, strength testing and reviews," Bowls Australia's National Coach Gary Willis said.
"The Jackaroos high performance team was afforded incredible access to the AIS facilities and was able to make excellent use of the expert medical and performance staff to advance our preparations for the forthcoming benchmark international event and ensure that we're well placed to exceed medal expectations.
It caps off a busy period which has also seen Rowing Australia, Athletics Australia, Basketball Australia, Cycling Australia and Football Australia all conduct camps in March.
AIS Director of Operations Rob Medlicott says: “The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown many challenges at sport, however our team has continued to work with athletes, coaches and officials to ensure we have excellent programs and facilities to support their preparations for major sporting events such as the Commonwealth Games.”
