Thousands go behind the scenes at the AIS over the summer holidays

18 January 2024

Tours of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) have been a hot ticket this summer with more than 3,000 people getting a behind the scenes look at the country’s premier high performance facility over the past month alone.

AIS tour numbers have returned to pre-pandemic levels with thousands visiting the site over the summer holidays.

The 90-minute public tours take visitors inside some of the AIS’ most exclusive facilities to get a taste of what it takes to become an Olympian and Paralympian and represent Australia on the world stage.

With the AIS Canberra site bustling with activity ahead of the Paris Olympic and Paralympics, tour groups are bound to catch a glimpse of some of Australia’s top athletes or may even be led by an Aussie sporting star like dual Paralympian Sarah Walsh or Commonwealth Games gymnastic Clay Stephens.

“Being an AIS tour guide gives me the opportunity to show off my second home at the AIS, share my story and hopefully inspire young kids to live out their dreams,” Walsh said.

The tours also include a visit to Sportex, an interactive exhibit showcasing Australian sporting memorabilia and allows visitors to test their sporting skills in skeleton, alpine skiing, wheelchair basketball, and more.

In Sportex, visitors can enjoy fun and safe interactive displays, learn about the history of Australian sport and be inspired to be active and play sport.

Guided public tours depart from the AIS Visitor Centre four times per day, with bookings required for groups of 15 people or more.
