New study into health of retired female athletes seeking survey participants

19 October 2023

An AIS study is seeking former elite female athletes to share how participation in sport has impacted their long-term health through an online survey.

The Health of Elite Retired Australian Female Athletes Survey (HER-Aus) is anonymous and takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Researchers hope the information gained from the study will help influence change at an organisational level and improve female athlete health from pathways through to retirement and beyond. The findings will likely lead to further research and inform future projects.

The survey is comprised of different sections, each focusing on a different health domain such as breast health, pelvic health, and mental health.

To be eligible for the survey participants must be over 18 years of age and have competed between 1981-2021 at either an international level, or a national level for more than one year. All participants will receive a $40 or $50 gift voucher as a token of appreciation.

This study is in partnership with La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre and has been approved by the Australian Institute of Sport Ethics Committee.
