Plans to upgrade the AIS Campus in Canberra have taken another step forward with Parliament approving the proposed works this week.

Construction of three new facilities at the AIS Campus in Canberra will commence from October 2025.

Prime Minister The Hon Anthony Albanese visited the site in May last year to announce a $249.7 million investment to upgrade AIS facilities so they are modern and world-leading.

The funding followed the Independent Review of AIS Infrastructure which recommended that the AIS Campus remains in Canberra.

The funding is focused on three facilities to ensure our athletes have access to the best testing and training facilities possible:

  • a 192 bed multi-story and fully para-accessible accommodation building
  • a large indoor Sport Dome that will provide 24/7 all-weather training facilities for track and field sports
  • a new Testing and Training Centre to provide state-of-the-art equipment and support for our athletes’ development.

The proposed works were referred to the Public Works Committee on 20 November 2024 initiating an inquiry into the project, culminating in a public hearing and site inspection.

Upon concluding the inquiry this week, the Committee finalised a report for Parliament recommending that the House of Representatives agree to the works going ahead.

The Public Works Committee’s report was tabled in both houses of Parliament this week, and a motion passed in the House of Representatives to allow construction to commence from October 2025.

This is a significant step towards the commencement of this exciting project that will benefit athletes and sports on the road to Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

The Australian Sports Commission will keep athletes, sports, other site users and the Canberra community informed as this work progresses.
